Addiction is one of Kenya’s most pressing public health challenges. According to NACADA, over 57% of Kenyans aged 15–65 have used alcohol or other substances, while regions like Rift Valley report more than 1 million people struggling with addiction, and about 400,000 need rehabilitation services. Despite these staggering numbers, rehab facilities have been scarce, expensive, and unevenly distributed.

Why Rehabilitation Centres Are Crucial

Rehabilitation centres are more than medical facilities they are lifelines. They provide counselling, detox support, behavioral therapy, and social reintegration, helping individuals reclaim their lives. For years, the lack of accessible centres forced families to rely on expensive private options or inadequate community programs.

Government Steps Up

In response, the government has announced an ambitious plan: build rehabilitation centres in all 47 counties. These centres will ensure affordable, accessible treatment for every Kenyan, reducing travel, stigma, and delays in care. Alongside this, the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) will now cover addiction treatment, easing the financial burden on families.

Impact on Communities

County-level centres are expected to transform local responses to addiction. Young people and adults who previously lacked access will now have structured support nearby, with trained staff guiding recovery. Community engagement and outreach programs will complement treatment, helping families reintegrate loved ones safely and with dignity.

A Message of Hope

Kenya’s commitment to 47 rehab centres is more than infrastructure it’s a national vision for recovery and hope. Addiction no longer has to be faced in isolation. With proper support, treatment, and access, countless Kenyans can take the first step toward reclaiming their lives.

Recovery is possible. Help is coming closer to home, and no one has to fight addiction alone.
